A Long Overdue Farewell

Six years. Almost 300 updates. More than 401,000 written words. 18,000 jokes that missed the mark. Ten fictional characters that did more with their lives than I ever could. Two imaginary corporate conglomerates with plans to take over the world operating without any kind of business license. One very overdue farewell.

It is with no small ounce of regret that I find myself writing what is slated to become the last P.Net update ever. It seemed like such a good idea when I came up with it yesterday but now that I am forced to actually type out the words that are in my head, it is definitely becoming a lot more difficult. But the truth is still the truth and no amount of ill-reasoned logic will change the fact that the site has been slowly dying for the past year anyway.

Free time isn't what it used to be and after six years, it's just too much work to continue doing what I have been doing. (I'm not really sure what that is, so if someone could enlighten me a little, I would appreciate it.) I suppose that I should be happy that the site grew to be what it is today but all I ever find myself lamenting on is that it's not where I want it to be and I doubt that it ever will. The hiatuses have simply become too frequent and the updates have become too few.

While I've thought long and hard about just leaving things as they are -- four updates a year are better than none, right? -- I think the time has come for the Pollestad.Net offices to close their doors for good. It has been a long, fun run but the incentive is simply no longer there. I have no idea what I'm supposed to do with the 130+ outlines and half-written updates that I have laying around but I'm sure I can pass them off to some homeless person and really make his day. At least he'll have something to wipe his ass with.

For now, I am planning on keeping the website up as is, which means all the archives will continue to be readable. Additionally, I plan on continuing to update the Pollestad.Net Facebook page (link) multiple times per day, so you can always like/follow us over there. (We also Twitter -- http://twitter.com/p_net -- but that's just a mirror of the Facebook page.) Lots of one-liners and humorous quips to be had for sure.

So, as I turn the lights off across the campus for the final time, I keep thinking that I'm supposed to say something meaningful here. I mean, I am a writer after all but after more than six years, I think I've said enough. With that, on behalf of Skip Walker, Art Dodger, Rad Tad, Reggie Watts, Johnny Truth, Joe G., Baby Julie, R. Pizoli, Intern Paul, Roger Garrison, and myself, we bid you adieu.
